Our Program
Below are our points of unity. These are things we see as essential for building AMU into a stronger union.
A Fighting Union
AMU must urgently engage in confrontational tactics to push for a good contract. Up to and including a strike! We must take nothing off the table when it comes to winning a better contract for our membership.
- Building a ladder of escalating tactics, beyond passive letter writing or displaying AMU merch
- Building a strike fund, and working with site reps to mobilize membership towards a strike
A Vocal Union
Unions are inherently political bodies. We have abandoned our position as a voice for the working class. At a time when immigrants in our school communities are being rounded up, and our fellow union members are being arrested right here in Los Angeles, we cannot afford to be silent!
- Establishing a position and/or committee within the union to develop and deliver political statements
- Following the lead of UTLA in engaging in community support as a union
A Larger Union
We are a small union. Many school employees are without union representation, or would benefit from integration into AMU. Members of the ACEA (the union for classified employees at Green Dot) face many of the same problems as AMU members. Unification would allow us to face Green Dot with more collective power.
- Outreach to ACEA membership to strengthen ties and merge the two unions
- An empowered organizing committee to yield 100% union shops and bring short- and long-term subs into the union (as other Teachers' Unions across the country have done).
Solidarity
Our work does not exist in a vacuum. Labor is more powerful when there is unity in our struggle. We should develop stronger relationships with unions whose work aligns with ours. To truly put up a fight against the cuts to education and the ICE incursions terrorizing our communities, we need more than our 600 member union. For working people to have a say in the governance of Los Angeles and beyond, we must work together!
- Communicating and developing points of mutual interest with other unions in related fields in LA County
- (UTLA, CSEA, school employees represented by Teamsters and SEIU)
- Joining the "We Can't Wait" Campaign of teachers' unions across California
- Working towards 2028 National Strike Alignment
